What Are Arteriosclerosis and Atherosclerosis?

The Level 3 syllabus introduces these two conditions that affect the arteries when it looks at the cardiovascular system. They may not be hugely useful if you’re planning to be a PT working on the gym floor, but if you choose to specialise in heart conditions or GP referrals you’d need to know them.

Which is why we’ve not only come up with this diagram showing the key points of each of them, but also devised a way to help you remember the difference!

So for arteriosclerosis you need to drop the H from ‘harden’ and think like a pirate (arr!):

Arteriosclerosis causes your arteries to ‘arden!

Then for atherosclerosis you need to think about the lisping sound made by ‘TH’:

ATHerosclerosis makes your arteries get THinner!

And you can download the diagram here.
