The Journey Taken by Air as it is Inhaled

The Level 2 syllabus not only requires you to learn the route taken by food once it’s entered your body (and if you’ve forgotten that you can remind yourself here) but the section covering the respiratory system also expects you to remember the journey taken by the air you’ve breathed in.

So, in the same way that we did for the digestive process, we’ve come up with an illustration that shows how air travels through the body once you’ve inhaled it:

Picture showing the route taken by air as it is inhaled: pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. Suitable for use on Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing course taught by YMCA and Active IQ

And, again, as we did with digestion, we’ve come up with a way to help you remember this:

The route goes pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli, or PLTBBA.

You’ll also need to remember that the word pulmonary means ‘relating to the lungs’. An example of this in the syllabus is where it talks about pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation.

Therefore, we’ve combined this with the journey taken by air as you inhale it to come up with the following mnemonic:

Pulmonary’s Lungs! Take Big Breaths Always!
